We are going to Maui for a week for a friends wedding ..we are going Oct 4th -11th (Wedding is on the 6th) we are staying at The Whaler...we got a direct flight from Chicago Ohare (Shocker I know)
And are renting a convertible...we booked with our travel agent thru Apple...just wondering if anyone has stayed at The Whaler or used Apple to go to Maui....I know the pool is small..I was also wondering if you can use pools at other resorts? Our friends will be at The Maui Westin just on the other side of Whalers Village from us...think we can hang at there pool with them a day or 2? Any other help would be awesome..we are in our early 30%26#39;s ....we dont have any kids...and is our first time to Maui.
The Whaler
The Whaler has a decent waterfront pool. It is also in a nice location on a good part of the beach. My sister loved the Whaler and has already reserved for their second trip. Usually, you can%26#39;t use the pools at other resorts. I think the Westin uses wrist bands for their guests. You could hang out with your friends, but probably won%26#39;t be able to use the pool. Have a wonderful time. Try the pool bar at sunset at the Sheraton for the cliff diving ceremony. Hula Grill has the Barefoot bar with nightly music that is nice. There is also a good bar and entertainment next door to the Whaler at the Kaanapali Beach Hotel. Other entertainment is in Lahaina. You can snorkle for free right off of Black Rock at the Sheraton.
The Whaler
My parents stayed at the Whaler last year when we got married- first weekend in October as well! They loved it- great beach location, really nice, huge rooms, very close to everything and next door to Whaler%26#39;s Village. I think you%26#39;ll be happy there-especially if you hang out with your friends at the Westin pool-Then you get the best of both worlds! Have fun!
We will be there the same time you are. We have stayed at the Whaler for the last 6 or 7 years. We go in October for 2 weeks [Oct 8-23]and stay there the whole time. I have been in lots of different units. Some are a little nicer than others, but really haven%26#39;t seen a really bad one. Do you know if your unit is ocean front, garden view??.
Yes, the pool is small but we are out there everyday for hours and it is wonderful!. The grounds are nice, the gym is remodeled, the parking garage is awful and you pay extra for it...oh well! It is still worth it
We travel with a couple who has kids but there usually aren%26#39;t a lot of kids in the pool area. They don%26#39;t allow kids pool toys so that many be part of the reason. We enjoy it since the pool is fairly quiet, not a lot of kids screaming but families are certainly welcome. Lots of folks go the same time every year and know each other that way. There is good and bad to that. Check out the lawn chairs [and who is in them everyday ] along the rock wall [nearest the ocean] by the pool...you will know what I mean!
The best part of the Whaler is its location. Central to everything along the Kaanapali walk way. You can walk to drink, dinner, shopping.
Be sure to enjoy the Sheraton bar at sunset.
If you have any other questions about the Whaler, let me know.
Sierra dog thank you...how long does it take to get there from the airport and is it easy to navigate around maui?
';They don%26#39;t allow kids pool toys so that many be part of the reason.';
We are staying here in August and I am not happy to hear this! I hope they at least allow noodles, I use one in the pool all the time, and my teens were looking forward to spending a lot of afternoons in the pool

Have your friends check to see if it is OK for you to use the pool for a short time while you visit. You may find that it is not a big deal because the hotel could not expect the two of you to not spend pool time together, at least I would hope not.
The last thing that they want to do is pi*s off their customers.
Ok sierradog.
Give us a hint, who is in the lawn chairs?. I love the whaler and it%26#39;s location.

Have your friends get the extra lawn chairs and then call you on the cell phone and just go join them.
I love the Whaler as well. If I won the lottery I would totally buy a place there.
My daughter had a little football in the pool for about 1 minute before we were told to take it out. We still love it though.
I hung out in the lawn chairs by the rock wall a lot, did I miss something?
Be careful with your investment dollars! I almost bought at the Whaler in the early 90%26#39;s, but am glad I elected not to!
There have been a number of ';special assessments'; since then... I heard the latest one that is coming up has to do with ocean water leaking in under the parking structure, which will be a most costly repair!!! Maybe ';sierradog'; will get a new one!!
When looking at HOA property, always check the associations track record for extra assessments!! My 90%26#39;s purchase would have cost me waaay more than anticipated!!
Our friends own a couple of condos so we are very lucky that they invite us each year. It is true about the fees...they keep going up and like I think I said in my first post...the garage is terrible and they keep talking about fixing it but I haven%26#39;t seen much action in the last couple of years. I know that many of the condos have new furniture and carpet though and I think the kitchens are getting updated too. There is good and bad everywhere. I still think you will like it there.
It is really easy to navigate around Maui. Get a map at the airport, lots of free pamphlets there in bag claim. I ';think'; it takes around 45 minutes to get from the airport to the Whaler. I could be a little off on that. We rent a convertible too and I am usually so busy enjoying the scenery I don%26#39;t even think about it.
They really don%26#39;t let kids have toys in the pool. The have ';pool police'; LOL ....and they enforce that rule most of the time.
Sorry sammy1031, since you are going to be there the same time as us, you are going to have to figure out the ';chairs by the rock wall thing for yourself!'; [it won%26#39;t be too hard!] Especially if you are 40 or younger.
Your key card will get you in the back gate to Whalers Village. It is a nice little shortcut if you need to run to the ABC store or just don%26#39;t feel like walking around on the walkway...although, you do miss out on that great view!
Geez, I can%26#39;t wait for October....! Anyway more questions, just ask~!
I was also wondering if you can use pools at other resorts? Our friends will be at The Maui Westin just on the other side of Whalers Village from us. tours on maui
