Best non-Disney beach location in Maui?

Hi, we are planning our first trip to Hawaii at the end of June.

We will spend 1 week on Maui and another week on the Big Island.

We already have plans for the BI but now I cannot decide on where to stay in Maui. I don%26#39;t want Disney but still would like to be close to the beaches and places to eat. So North or West or South? Any recommendations will be appreciated! Oh yes, and we are on a budget...Quirky old school condos or B%26amp;Bs are fine!

Aloha!

have you considered ResortQuest Maui kaanapali Villas?

NOT Disney at all...pretty grounds, great beach, good location...older property but clean...good restaurant on-site!

If you are on a budget, Kihei might be a match for you. It is a beach town with plenty of condos to choose from. Kamaole Beaches (3 of them) right there and many restaurants. Depending on which condo you choose, you could be within walking distance to beaches, grocery stores, and restaurants.

I can recommend this condo in Kihei, stayed there once before and going back again another one of his condos next week!

Kiehei is great for the budget minded(like me). Great beaches and close to other stuff. I stay at Kamaole Beach Royale. Small property, full ocean view, about $140 per night.

Aloha

I%26#39;m trying to imagine a ';Disney beach';. Only thing in Hawaii that comes to mind is the man-made lagoon/beach at Waikoloa on Big Island.

If you mean you don%26#39;t want high-rise, high-density, lotsa people, you%26#39;ll not want Kaanapali. Might like farther north on West Maui -- Kahana, Napili, Kapalua -- maybe not Kapalua (too expensive). West Maui refers to the NW lobe of the island.

South Maui (SW coast) has less expensive condos in Maalea and N. Kihei -- have to drive to better beaches in S. Kihei, Wailea.

Hana is very ';atmospheric';, but very low on restaurants.

You might find something suitable in Paia on the east side of Maui.

You can go to West Maui or South Maui and still manage to avoid Maui Disney. It%26#39;s generally easier to dodge the posed overbuilt Disney feel by going to South Maui(Maalaea,Kihei,Wailea). But you%26#39;ll be O.K. in West Maui as well if you stay away from anything on Kaanapali Beach. That%26#39;s the very heart of the big resort scene on Maui and the closest thing to Waikiki that you%26#39;ll find on this rock.

In South Maui, look in Kihei, preferably south Kihei.

In West Maui, look in Honokowai, Kahana or Napili.

South Kihei is a rustic beach town and will have many more shops, restaurants and beaches within walking distance. Honokowai, Kahana and Napili have more direct waterfront accommodations but not much town and feel more like sleepy bedroom suburbs, IMO.

There%26#39;s my .02 :)

I think the appeal of maui is that it is very clean, organized and tourist freindly which I would assume you mean disney, why not go to another Island, How about Molokai?

When I think of Disneyland, I think of pretend life. Like going to the Venetian in Vegas. Nothing like the real thing and every inch sparkling clean so as not to offend anyone. I think that is hard to find on Maui - the Grand Wailea and also a handful of resorts in the Kaanapali area are the only places that come to mind.

If it%26#39;s just two of you, check the Napili area. The condos are older and smaller but on an excellent crescent shaped beach where the sea turtles like to hang out. The Kahana area has larger condos on a decent narrow stretch of beach. Otherwise Kihei is nice. You may have a little trouble finding something on short notice so just be open to a condo that might need some updates.

Ok after driving all over the island. ( Except the whole road to hana) I can not think of anything that would remind me of disney.... which when I think disney I think fake, way over priced and very crowded. Even at kanapali beach area... it was not super crowded.. lots of space to hang out. I think that southern calf. or FL beaches are way more crowded. One thing that we noticed was how we could drive on a road and not see another car for a while. ( Loop around west maui) We live in a very congested crowded city and we loved the small town feel that all of maui offered... so I think that considering what the mainland is like you will find maui refreshing where ever you go :) so go for the best deal you can find and enjoy the most wonderful place on earth!

Did you miss the Grand Wailea? I could have swore I saw a giant Mouse on the water elevator!!!
