We%26#39;re planning to go to the Maui Film Festival in Wailea on Sunday night, June 17th, to see a movie under the stars on the golf course there. They have a double feature starting at 8pm. I%26#39;m guessing that the second feature will be over around 11:30pm or midnight. I see that the drive from Wailea is about 50 minutes back to Kaanapali, where we%26#39;re staying at the Sheraton. Are the roads safe driving that late at night? I haven%26#39;t read up on the roads for that drive, just wondering if they%26#39;re winding or one lane or anything like that?
I know, I know, just go back after the first feature. That would%26#39;ve been my selection. Problem is, husband is a HUGE Reece Witherspoon fan and her movie is the second feature.
Also, we%26#39;re going to head out early and grab dinner in Wailea. Any recommendations for dinner? We%26#39;re not looking for anything fancy, since we%26#39;ll be in our ';resort wear'; for the movies that night.
Thanks!
Wailea Question
The road that you will drive is safe. Not too winding at all. Allow yourself an hour just to be safe to get there. I have always wanted to go to the festival but have never been there during it. Have fun and enjoy yourselves.
As far as dinner you can eat in Kihei which is less expensive than Wailea. Cafe O Lei is excellent and there are many others to shoose from as well. There are also quite a few restuarants in Wailea but will be slightly pricier. You can pretty much dress in resort wear at any restuarant on Maui.
Wailea Question
This sounds like fun! Just be normally careful driving the connector road from Maaeal towards Lahaina. Have to look out for the over-tired and over-served, especially on that two-lane road. You could go south on pokey Kihei Road to Wailea and return via Piilani Hwy.
Hey thanks for a great idea! Although, we get there that day, so we might be wiped. Hum, I shall think on this one, but I bet the kids would get a kick out of it.
Watch that Honopiilani :( We just had an 8 year old Texas boy die in a head-on with a (suspected) intoxicated/drugged out local woman a few days ago. The cops were already hunting for her from a 911 call on an earlier incident just minutes before. The cops were apparently having a bit of trouble locating her. The head-on collision fixed that. Her car split in two pieces and the flying exhaust system nearly took out some surfers at a picnic table. She was unharmed.
Very sad. Traffic fatalities are definitely up this year !
Great choice for an activity on Maui. You want to make sure you get there early. You will park in a parking lot on Wailea Iki Dr and then they shuttle you to the golf course. We went at about 6:00pm last year and the place was filling up fast. You want to take a lawn chair or mat to sit on. Also, it can get a little chilly about the time the second show starts so bring a sweater. You can eat dinner in Kihei, or the Shops at Wailea, there is also a place called Matteo%26#39;s on I believe, Wailea Iki Dr. that I hear is really good.
Mulligans is a nice ';cheaper'; casual restaurant in Wailea
Sounds like a fun night
Wow, that%26#39;s scary. I hadn%26#39;t heard that story. I%26#39;ll have to read up on that. I guess that%26#39;s a risk we take any time we%26#39;re on the roadway that late at night. We live in a small town in Texas with two lane roads and they do scare me especially in the early morning hours with all the intoxicated drivers that closed down the bars in town. We%26#39;ll keep that in mind in making the decision to stay or not.
Thanks for the tips on parking and what to bring. I think I read somewhere that we can rent lawn chairs there. I don%26#39;t plan on buying any while we%26#39;re there. Do you know how much they are to rent? Do they have a section for those with chairs and those with blankets? I wouldn%26#39;t want to be on a blanket behind a bunch of people in chairs.
Yes, it looks like a lot of fun. The website is mauifilmfestival.com. Not a bad deal for $10/person. Double feature is $20/person. Check on them letting the kids go. I read something about they limit the kids (under 21) either to certain features or certain functions. They cited alcohol law restrictions. But, they don%26#39;t serve alcohol during the features, so I don%26#39;t know.
Thanks for all of your input. Love these boards! Great source of information!
LittleLisa, strike what I said about the kids. I just looked back at the website and it says that kids are free on Sunday night for the double feature. What I was reading must have been for one of the events they%26#39;re holding during the film festival. Sorry about that.
Can I point out that you can have accidents anywhere? Just drive safe.
Lisa and others traveling to Maui...check out the Whalers Village and Shops at Wailea websites for events, both malls have stuff all the time.
We were in Wailea in Jan and they had quite a bit of entertainment. We saw a super dance show at the Shops at Wailea on Wednesday night...free! Also there are several very nice galleries there that Lisa Junior would enjoy. The dance show was both adult and children dancing and was very good. Don%26#39;t forget you can wander along and watch the luau at the Marriott for free too!
