Okay, I was visiting some sight that said to check out Art Night on Friday nights in Lahaina. My daughter is a budding artist (very creative and draws amazing pictures and also is a great little dancer). Anyway, has anyone been? What did you think?
Lahaina~Art Night
Well, after all....it is Friday in Lahaina...(a ';must do'; anyway..) the Art Night event adds an bit of a sophisticated twist to some of the carnival-type atmosphere that can be found here most weekends! It%26#39;s all good though!!
Some of the galleries pour free wine and offer horsdoeuvres to those perusing their inventory, again, kind of neat if you%26#39;re into that sort of thing! Many of these shops are paying in excess of 30 bucks/sq ft for their spaces....doing the math, that%26#39;s 60-grand per month for several of the mid-sized galleries!! Offering free wine %26amp; cheese seems like an inexpensive way to get a few more deep-pocketed visitors into their stores!
Lahaina~Art Night
We have gone to art night several times and always enjoy ourselves. Lahaina is a party town and Friday %26amp; Sat. nights it really rocks.
Oh, and before you start to feel sorry for all those art dealers. Unless its differant in Hawaii, on the mainland, retail space is quoted as so much a sq ft per year not month.
Anyone see any retail space on Front St. for 30bucks/sq ft per year, PLEASE let me know - I%26#39;ll take the whole darn street!!!!
In Lahaina, DpDiver, it%26#39;s Per Month! The obscene rents are largely why there is so much turn-over in the shops on Front St.
I surely won%26#39;t be feeling sorry for any business shelling out 60K per month for gallery rental space.... It%26#39;s likely that Chris Lassen will make the Forbes 100 list in the near future!!
I think you misunderstood my post. Lets say its $30 sq ft.
2000 ft X $30 = $60,000. You then divide that by 12 to get monthly rent. $5000...
Nobody could survive paying what you suggest. In effect $360 sq ft. per year. I know, I%26#39;m in retail.
A quick goggle search found retail space on Maui going for $3.20 to $4.76 per square ft per month.
Takes foot out of mouth....OOPS guess you were correct..
Just read where a 10 x10 ft retail space on Front street is going for
CHOKE!!!!!! $14,000 a MONTH!!!
Frightening concept, eh?? Unless, of course, you%26#39;re the hilariously laughing landowner...
Hi Lisa, hubby and I did Arts night. It was interesting looking at the arts -- some I can appreciate more than others. Some galleries offer non-alcoholic beverage also. I remember that it really doesn%26#39;t get started until after dinner, but galleries are also opened during the day so if it gets late and your daughter gets tired, you can always go back during the day.
If your daughter would like to meet some artists, talk with them, etc, it%26#39;s a great idea. Since most of the people are just wandering down Front St., the artists are pretty secondary to the whole scene - most poeple don%26#39;t even know it is %26#39;art night%26#39;. So, unless its the rare well known artist, to me it just looks like they are just kind of standing around waiting for someone to talk to them - sort of like an unknown author having a book signing at the local book store. I bet they would appreciate someone with artistic interest and questions.
At a more %26#39;common%26#39; level, most weekends there is a craft fair at the Banyan tree in Lahaina. The folks at the tables are usually the artists / craftsmen selling their own work, and do a lot of talking with visitors.
Lahaina Dad
Thanks guys! That was just the kind of information I was looking for.
