Hi - I%26#39;ve been looking at the postings for the road to Hana and have a question, We%26#39;re coming to Maui in August and as part of our stay we%26#39;re spending one night in Hana. What I haven%26#39;t been able to read about is whether spending the night in Hana (and therefore being less rushed) implies you can get a later start on the road to avoid some of the eastbound traffic. Also, let%26#39;s say we start at 11 A.M. - will we hit alot of return traffic?
Also, as part of our stay in Hana we%26#39;re considering doing the power hanggliding at the Hana airport - does anyone have any experience with this?
Thanks - this is the best website ever! I%26#39;ve built my trip around this forum
Road to Hana - best time to drive if spending night in Hana?
We are doing the power hang gliding in Aug and are also spending one night in Hana. Can%26#39;t make any suggestions as we have not done it yet but sounds like we have similar plans. Great minds think a like!
Road to Hana - best time to drive if spending night in Hana?
On the way to hana you will hit traffic for a good part of the day. Some vacationers just can%26#39;t get up early so they will start for Hana as late as noon. Often they will realize how long it is taking and just not complete the whole drive.
Traffic returning from Hana will not be heavy until later in the day. If you leave Hana late morning you will be fine. That said, just because traffic leaving Hana isn%26#39;t heavy doesn%26#39;t mean you are completely out of the woods. The throngs headed toward Hana can clog up the narrow passages. Tourists not paying attention can drift into your lane and often are so intent upon their journey they fail to yield right of way to oncoming cars. Just watch out for them and you will be A-ok.
