Two questions... We are going the the winery this trip(never been there before).
1.) Is Makawao worth a stop before or after the winery?
2.) Can you reccomend any spots to eat in Makawao, either real food or baked snacks?
Thanks, in advance, for your input.
Mike
Is Makawao worth a look?
Depends on what you%26#39;re into. We enjoy wandering around and checking out all the little boutiques.
Is Makawao worth a look?
we really liked this little cowboy town. There is a bakery on Baldwin ave called komoda bakery.. looks kid of shabby on the outside, but yummy. We stopped here on our way back from the crater :)
This is a very diverse little town... a neat mix of yuppies and hippies lol
Definitely stop there...so cute. I love it. Sort of a hippy-dippy artistic place with lots of good places to eat. Lots of art/boutique shops etc. Parking is at a premium though. Just look around and you%26#39;ll find many good restaurants. The place is small. Then you can continue on to Pa`ia.
How you want to plan your day depends on where you need to get back to. We go to the winery first because we are usually on the ship. Don%26#39;t buy the pineapple wine...funny but not that good.
Thanks for the responses so far... How does this sound? We leave fairly early, right after breakfast, stroll around town and stop at the bakery for late morning snacks. Then, we head up to the winery and check it out(I understand it is small and won%26#39;t take up that much time). Then we stop at the little store %26amp; get a late lunch to eat on the winery property.
Mahalo...
That sounds like a great plan. We love to visit the winery, the drive up and the scenery is so beautiful.
Makawao....
The Sedona (AZ) of the Pacific, Hawaiian style.
We heard about Kamoda bakery here and stopped by last July for a famous cream puff. THEY WERE ON VACATION! How rude to be on vacation during our vacation. lol ;) Gives us something to do next trip. Plus to take a stroll in town. It looked like a cool little town. We were tight on time so we couldn%26#39;t do it last time.
As for the winery, do give the pineapple wine a taste. We enjoy it. The Splash more so than the Blanc. Haven%26#39;t tried the Blush yet. And do try the raspberry wine if you enjoy sweet dessert wines. We have a five year old bottle still in the fridge. Yes 5 years old. It has a very high sugar content. They said it kept well in the fridge once opened and they didn%26#39;t lie. I had some a couple weeks ago and I think it tastes better than when we bought it. And it looks like it actually came down in price by a couple bucks a bottle.
Makawao is a small paniolo town in Upcountry with many small arts and crafts stores.
There are several nice restaurants in town... one of our favorites for lunch is Polli%26#39;s (';come in and eat or we%26#39;ll both starve';). They have a great seafood burrito... Casanova%26#39;s is nearby and has pretty good Italian food.
Komoda%26#39;s Bakery is well known for their cream puffs... they also have cookies and other baked goods.
If you go to Makawao, stop in at the Randy Jay Braun gallery. The manager is Rachel and is one of the nicest people you will ever meet. She has a big smile for everybody and exudes Aloha...
My wife went to Makawao. When she returned she said there is nothing worth seeing there.
I said to her, ';That%26#39;s exactly why you went!'; I%26#39;ve been to play golf in Pukalani and had lunch in Makawao. I really think I could have had some fun there on a Friday or Saturday night. Know what I mean?
Makawao is basically Julian (San Diego County) with an island twist.
There%26#39;s a decent Mexican restaurant and a couple of others.
You can kill an hour or two there, definitely more if you%26#39;re into knick knacks :)
Aloha :)
