Going to Haleakala on a Sunrise Tour. Need some ideas for some warm clothing suggestions that won%26#39;t be too cumbersom to pack. My daughter and I tend to be Chilly Willies. My husband and son can%26#39;t imagine that it will be that cold. I want to have an enjoyable time but don%26#39;t want to pack an extra suitcase. Please help!!!
Clothing for Haleakala Sunrise...Brrrrrrr!
When I was there for sunrise, it was 34 degrees with the wind blowing about 15 mph and a little fog (condensation). Under those conditions, inside the viewing shelter mostly full of people, I was warm enough in shorts and a lined windbreaker. There were plenty of people who had blankets, etc. If you prefer, or end up getting stuck outside the shelter, I%26#39;d suggest long pants a sweatshirt or lined windbreaker and a couple nice heavy blankets from your condo/motel room.

My husband %26amp; I went to Haleakala in May, %26amp; it was cold. We are from Seattle so we are somewhat use to it. We were in a Jeep with the top down. The thermometer in the Jeep said the outside temp got down to 42. We wore gloves, long sleeve shirts, sweatshirts, long pants, socks with sandals, %26amp; scarfs. We were cold but it was o.k. Something we also did that helped a ton was using disposable heat wraps. They are called ThermaCare lower back heat wraps. They are about $3.50 each, but they last 8hrs %26amp; take up no room in the suitcase. It felt nice having something warm. We wish we had taken a towel from the B%26amp;B to sit on. There is a rock wall to sit on %26amp; that was very cold. Are only regrets for our trip to Maui was doing Haleakala at sunrise. When we come back with the kids, we will go to Haleakala during the day. The drive up is full of turns, which in the dark made me a little nauseous even with anti nausea meds. There are cows not fenced in %26amp; we came less than a foot from hitting a deer. When we drove down we were disappointed that we had driven in the dark, we found the drive down very pretty. We were just too tired to explore the area since we had been up since 1:30am. But I do think you would enjoy Haleakala at anytime.
34 degrees? Yikes! The heat wraps are an excellent idea. I actually have a box at home that I have never used. Now they have a destination. I will take your advice and take the condo blankets. Gloves are also something I wouldn%26#39;t have thought to pack for Maui! Thanks for taking the time to answer my question. I really appreciate it!
I%26#39;m really looking forward to Haleakala.
The only warm clothes that we usually bring are the clothes that we wear to the airport when we depart. One pair of long pants (zippered legs to convert to shorts) a fleece overshirt and maybe a windbreaker. Bring a blanket from your room or an oversized beach towel for additional warmth.
If you forget to bring warm clothes, there a plenty of merchants who will gladly sell you a sweatshirt or two.... ;-)
My husband and I wore jeans, t-shirt, a hooded sweatshirt, and a light windbreaker jacket, with sneakers with socks. SInce we visited in late October, we were wearing the jeans and jackets so there wasn%26#39;t a need to pack them. We also brought those cheap one-size fits all gloves you can buy at most stores here, which were light and easy to pack.
Best suggestion is to dress in layers, because after the sunrise the day warms up pretty quickly and it%26#39;s good to be able to take off layers as the temps rise.
:-)
