My husband and I are going to the BI the first of July. Are there any ';special events'; occurring during the 4th of July holiday week?

They have all these things; however they also close the entire Bayfront highway to vehicular traffic and the resulting parking situation is difficult, as the parking downtown is limited at all times. One would want to arrive early and get situated.
Hilo is the largest town on the island and there is more than enough turnout from the local population to cause congestion. The chances of the fireworks being rained out or fogged out is 50-50. Such is life in Hilo. I would not drive from the other side for the events. If you happen to be over here, then for sure, check it out.
