I am traveling to Kauai with my wife and two boys, ages 10 and 12 in Nov 2007 for the first time. We are limiting ourselves to doing one extra cost activity while on the island. We would like to limit this one activity to a max of $500. Things like Zip lining, small plan tour, Napali Coast boat ride (do they run in Nov?), helicopter (way beyond $500 for the 4 of us), tubing trip, kayaking trip, surfing leasons, etc.
We are a very active family and plan to spend our time swimming, snorkeling and hiking.
Thanks for your suggestions. Great board!
Eric
What one ';extra'; thing would you do?
If both of your boys are over 80lbs then I%26#39;d highly recommend a zipline tour with Princeville Ranch Adventures.
A Na Pali trip would be great in the summer but in November most days they will not be going out. And, even if they tell you they will try to get to the Na Pali there%26#39;s a good chance they won%26#39;t actually go.
The helicopter tour is great but it is expensive and I am now of the opinion that there are safety issues that make it an unreasonable risk.
I haven%26#39;t done a tubing trip but a friend of mine said it was just ok.
Kayaking is fun and I think you may be able to do that in addition to something else. I%26#39;d recommend kayaking up the Wailua and a hike to Secret Falls. You don%26#39;t need a tour - just a couple of kayaks.
Never tried surfing but it seems great.

Agree. I did the tubing and it was fun. But for more adventure and thrill, the ziplining thru Princeville Ranch was great.
Hmmm...some of our best memories didn%26#39;t cost a thing. Though the helicopter was fun. Check our GoList...

I would do a kayak tour up the Wailua, then hike into Secret Falls. In my mind, you can zipline in a lot of places around the world - it%26#39;s not a Kauai -specific activity. Tromping through the mud to a magnificent waterfall surrounded by chickens? THAT%26#39;S Kauai. =]
Surfing lessons might also be fun, but I quit ours after about 20 minutes - I just don%26#39;t enjoy inhaling that much salt water.
Exhaust the kids with lots of physical activity one day, then hire a babysitter for a couple of hours and surprise your wife with a catered romantic dinner for two on an isolated beach. Watch the sunset, roast marshmellows over a small fire after dinner, and remember just how much you love each other. That%26#39;s $500 well-spent. See www.heavenlycreations.org for example. Zip lines are fun, too, though.
With 2 boys - I%26#39;d do the surfing lessons - you %26amp; you%26#39;re wife too! It is so much fun and not all that expensive - it would make for some great memories and stories for your kids to tell their friends and classmates.
I%26#39;m in my mid fifties and took my first lesson last September with Hawaiian Surfing Adventures - they%26#39;re based in Hanalei, but go where the surfing conditions are good - Excellent instructor and I could not believe how much fun it was ( I stood first time) and thanks to the photographer that came along, I have 250 photos of me surfing (and falling and generally looking like a dork) - A real high point of our trip!
Have a wonderful time!
