My mom and step-dad want to go to Hawaii in Nov or Dec. and cannot travel alone so we have been asked to go along and help plan. They%26#39;d like to spend 2 weeks, with one week possibly on Oahu and the other on Kauai.
Have heard that Oahu is a busy island with Kauai more of a relaxed feel to it. My husband wants to visit Pearl Harbor and we are pretty much beach bums but my parents (in their 60%26#39;s) will want to do some sight seeing. Neither of them get around very well.
This is our first and most like last trip to Hawaii and I would like to plan as informed as possible. How are the beaches on these islands and what is the weather and surf like this time of year? Any advise would be greatly appreciated as they are leaving it mostly to me to plan this trip. We are hoping to do some timeshare exchanging for at least one of the weeks.
The 2 islands we are looking at - would these be good choices for a 1 time trip to Hawaii for 2 weeks? Also, regarding flights - we would be flying out of DTW or IND - any advise on booking flights and into what airport, etc. I know you must get sick of these questions - thanks for your help!
Some advise for Nov-Dec. 2 week vacation for 1st timers
i know these kinds of questions are a pain - but please - any thoughts on anything i asked about? please?
Some advise for Nov-Dec. 2 week vacation for 1st timers
Oahu (Honolulu) is busy. The weather is likely to be a bit better in November. Those big huge waves you may have seen on TV that people surf happen on the North shore in December...but Honolulu does not get even close to that rough. There are many site seeing tours on Oahu for your folks plus they will probably want to do a luau. Waikiki beach in Honolulu is probably the most famous beach in the world but all the islands have beaches, some more than others.
Your second choice of Kauai is also good as it has good beaches and siteseeing. It is really laid back compared to Honolulu.
You will probably find the most choices of flights to Honolulu so you need to decide if you want to start or end your trip there. You can get to all the other islands in like a 1/2 hour or so on an interisland flight. There is no direct flights ftom DTW that I am aware of but you can go NWA to Minneapolis and then direct to Honolulu...Not sure about IND but I think the same route would apply.
Your choice of islands is, I think, ideal. You%26#39;ll get a taste of the big city with a lot of historic sites thrown in, and the rural peace of Kaua`i. You%26#39;ll see Waikiki, of course, because after all, it%26#39;s Waikiki. The Pearl Harbor memorial is moving and impressive and is, IMO, a must see. You can also see Iolani Palace, and I%26#39;m sure others with more info on Oahu will chime in here with more ideas.
Kaua`i has superb beaches. Some are beautiful but not swimmable. Some are beautiful with a variety of conditions for strong or not so strong swimmers. Some have lifeguards. Snorkeling can be pretty decent. At Ke`e beach, to me the quintessential Hawaiian beach, you can even walk in and get just deep enough to put your face in the water and see fish, or you can swim. My MIL loved it for that reason. It%26#39;s reef-protected and usually very calm, and although you can get big waves in the winter it can also be very nice.
You don%26#39;t say what type of lodgings you want, and what your budget is, but I%26#39;d suggest either a cottage or a 2 BR condo. When we brought my MIL/FIL out we had a condo, and it was very nice to have the living area as well as separate bedrooms, which you don%26#39;t get in a hotel or 1BR.
You will definitely want a car on Kaua`i. There%26#39;s not much in the way of public transportation, and you%26#39;ll want to explore the various parts of the island.
Lots of Oahu info. Some of the sites are good for all islands:
